What Makes My Teeth Look Stained
It is widely accepted that a nice white smile and healthy looking teeth will affect just how others see you, this is equally as important in both the workplace and personally.
So we can decide on the best way to get whiter teeth, it is important to understand just why our teeth get stained and what has caused the problem.
Generally there are two types of teeth staining, namely Extrinsic and Intrinsic Staining.
Intrinsic stains are the most difficult to remove, quite often they are caused by injury to the teeth, but other causes can include:
- Vitamin Deficiencies
- Invasive Dental Teatment Such As Root Canal Work
- Antibiotics such as Tetracycline
The stains caused by Tetracycline in particular are usually grey or brown and are quite hard to shift
Stains that are Intrinsic are deep into the tooth and are less likely to be removed by bleaching, and could require other cosmetic treatments such as crowns or veneers. If you do suffer from Intrinsic staining, you should discuss your options with your dentist
These are the most common type of stains, and are primarily caused by what we eat and drink, the worst culprits being red wine, tea and coffee along with acidic foods. Another main cause comes from smoking.
These type of stains are usually just on the external enamel of the teeth and are yellow in colour, these can usually be removed by whitening or bleaching treatments.
Teeth Whitening can be performed by most dentists, and is also available in many beauty salons and spas, costs vary from around £200 upwards and can go up to £800+ in some areas.
These costs can be quite restrictive; especially when you consider that the treatment can need redoing.
The development of home teeth whitening kits has been a godsend for many thousands of people world wide, they use the same products as your dentist, and if used correctly can provide the same results for a mere fraction of the cost.
